HistoryKeel laid by John Brown & Co. Ltd., Clydebank, Scotland in Dec. 1930. Work halted by the Depression from 1931 to 1934, launched Sept. 1934. Maiden voyage May 1936. The ultimate in luxury and speed in her day. Decommissioned 1967 and berthed at Long Beach, California where she serves as a hotel and convention center.
The ModelImpressive original hand-crafted ship model at 1/16” scale from plans by Harold A. Underhill. Basswood plank-on-frame hull, vinyl superstructure, fully operational with four motor driven propellers on two electronic speed controls. Fully lighted interior for night sailing. Includes over 120 scale figures on deck. Length overall 63 ¾” , beam 7 3/8”.
The ArtistMr. Phillips was born in Brazil and educated in England, serving a five year Marine Engineering Apprenticeship before going to sea for nine years, including nine months service aboard RMS Queen Mary. He held management positions in ship design, repair and new construction until his retirement in 1986.
