HistoryBuilt in 1872 at the dawn of the modern era, this ironclad twin-screw steam-powered Flatiron class gunboat was designed with a shallow draft for coastal defense.
The ModelOriginal ship model design with plank on bulkhead construction, using lead plates to simulate iron, holly wood decks and pear wood cabins. Scale 3/16² = 1¹0¹¹. Length 17².
The ArtistMr. Nagel has been building ship models for over thirty years, specializing in unusual and rarely modeled vessels. His ship models can be found in museums and collections around the world, and may be seen in public buildings in San Francisco, including One California Place. He also creates abstract sculpture working in marble and casting in stainless steel and bronze.
