HistoryDesigned and built by Wm. H. Webb of New York in 1851, the clipper Comet set many records in seven passages to California and two voyages around the world. Sold to British owners in 1863 and lost by fire at sea in 1865.
The ModelOriginal ship model from plans by Wm. Crothers and Thos. Hornsby, and from CrotherŒs ³American Built Clipper Ship³ (1997). Plank on hollow lift hull with planked topsides and coppered bottom. Commercial fittings include blocks, deadeyes and anchors. Proportional linen rigging. Scale 1:96. Model length 38², width 13², height 27². Signed and dated on keel plaque.
The ArtistMr. Candiliere is a professional ship modeler with 35 years experience, specializing in American merchant ship models of sail and steam eras, and tugs. His model of the tug Hercules is on display at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. Will accept commissions.
