HistoryTypical coasting barge used on the east coast of England for two centuries, with a spritsail fore-and-aft rig easily handled by a small crew. Flat-bottomed with lee boards, examples of these colorful barges can still be seen in English port museums.
The ModelOriginal ship model from plans by David Metcalf. Bread and butter built up bow and stern with planked hull of hardwood. Fittings and components by hand of the artist with few commercial additions. Radio control sail and electric motor. Scale 1:24. Length 50².
The ArtistCapt. Hutchins began his naval career at age 14 and continued as master after his emigration to Canada. A long-time ship modeler, he specializes in English barges and sailing vessels of historic interest. His colorful ship models are displayed in several Halifax tourist locations.
