HistoryBuilt in 1861 at the Eads yard in Mound City, Illinois, and subsequently active in operations on the Mississippi. Struck a torpedo and sank in the Yazoo River in December, 1862. The wreck has been recovered and is now on display at the Cairo Museum, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
The ModelOriginal ship model design at 1:96 scale. Mixed media, fully detailed, superbly finished with subtle weathering techniques. Overall length 23 inches. Nameplate attached to cradle.
The ArtistMr. Nagel has been building ship models for over thirty years, specializing in unusual and rarely modeled vessels. His ship models can be found in museums and collections around the world, and may be seen in public buildings in San Francisco, including One California Place. He also creates abstract sculpture working in marble and casting in stainless steel and bronze.
